주제 : Becoming a good engineer

 

발표자 소개:

윤성호 박사는 포항공과대학교에서 기계공학 학사, 환경공학 석사 학위를 받았고 이후 이집트에서 이 년간 고등학교 교사로 근무하였습니다.  이 후 영국 케임브리지 대학교에서 유체역학으로 박사학위를 받은 후 영국의 De Montfort University 및 Alstom 회사에서 근무하였습니다.  2012년부터는 GE 항공에서 근무하며 항공기 엔진에 관한 연구 및 개발 활동을 수행하고 있습니다.  산책과 책읽기 영화보기를 좋아하고 2018년부터는 뮌헨 청소년 과학캠프 및 과학교실을 운영하고 있습니다.

 

발표내용:

Despite 10+ years professional career as an engineer after PhD, becoming a good (better) engineer is still a challenge to me.  In this talk, I will share my personal reflection on what makes us (me) to be a good engineer.  It is a subjective and personal point of view based on an on-going journey.  However, this may provide food for thought for younger engineers who are about to start their professional career.  The talk will begin with a current academic trend and the pitfall, "specialization", which is dominant in academia but not healthy in the real world.  Becoming a good engineer means more than being skilled in technical and scientific domains.  Your communication including writing, listening, speaking and, most importantly, story-telling often means more than your technical and scientific work. Intellectual curiosity is a good starting point for a scientific work but engineering work is always aiming to address the needs of the customers.  Engineers are also like football players who work as a team.  Your teamwork and relationship with others prevail over your individual talents.  In the end you either win or lose as a team including your not-very-pleasant manager!  Finally we will talk of a few aspects which make our professional work more meaningful to our personal life and our community.
